Storm in Kingfisher County

Highline sags against the storm
Loaded with sparrows wing by wing
Thrown loosely down by a driving wind
Out of the gale like scattered beads.

Loaded with sparrows wing by wing,
Rejoined on a four-strand powerline,
Out of the wind like scattered beads
The color of tarnished silverware.

Rejoined on a four-strand powerline
Wind-puffed sparrows blow like leaves
The color of tarnished silverware.
Movement slows to a hearty breeze;

Wind-blown sparrows fly like leaves.
Promising patches of bluing sky,
Slow swinging wires in a peaceful breeze
Urging swirling sparrows high.

Bluing patches of Winter sky
The color of Sunday dinner plates
Urge sweet clouds of sparrows high.
High wires askew without the wind

In front of skies like Sunday plates.
A sky wiped clear by the driving gale,
High wires askew without the wind
Highlines empty after a storm.
